STUDY PERMIT

Canada attracts international students to come to Canada and study at Canadian K12 schools, Community & Career Colleges and Universities. In last ten years, Canada jumped up the table from 9th to 4th position as the leading Study Abroad Destination. Since 2014, Canada devised new measures and strategy to attract international students. In 2019 a new strategy to attract and diversify the target student markets was introduced. In 2019, Canada issued 615000 study permits.

Canada is a preferred study abroad destination due to its post graduate work permit opportunity to international students that may lead to Permanent Residence in Canada.

During their studies, students at post-secondary level are allowed to work part time (20 hours per week) per week during term period, besides unlimited hours on campus. During vacations, they can do full time job.

International students at post-secondary are also allowed to bring their spouse and children to Canada. Their spouse can work full time with an open work permit whereas their children are allowed to study at K12 schools without paying any tuition fee.

Children studying in K12 schools may be accompanied by their parents who can remain in Canada on Visitor visa.

Admission in K2 Schools:

There is no requirement for admission in K12 schools. Students are admitted on the basis of their age in their respective level. There is no Language proficiency requirement as students are offered ESL classes. School year runs from September through June. High School students (grade 9-12) may also join in second semester starting from February.

Admission in Community and Career Colleges:

International students who have complete their high school in their home country can apply for studies in Canadian Community and career colleges. At college level students can study for certificate (1 year), Graduate Certificate (1-2 years) Diploma(2 years), Advance Diploma (3 year) or a degree program (4 years). Students need to show 55% or higher marks in their high school diploma depending upon level of course they are joining. They are also required to show their English/French language proficiency depending upon their proposed institution. For admission in Certificate, Diploma and Advance Diploma programs, students need to show IELTS 6.0 with no module less than 5.5. For admission in Degree program or Graduate certificate, IELTS 6.5 with no module less than 6.0 is acceptable.                        

Students with low IELTS may opt English for Academic purpose for 1-2 semesters.

Admission in Universities:

Canadian Universities offer Bachelor, Master and Ph.D  Programs. Bachelor degree is complete in 4-5 years, Master in 1.5 -2 years and Ph.D in 3-5 years.

For admission in Canadian Universities, students need to show high academic record with English language proficiency. For admission in Undergraduate program, 70% and above percentage is required for admission depending upon the program and university. For admission in Master degree programs, admissions are further competitive. Students with 70% marks or 3.2+ CGPA can submit their admission application. However, due to competitive nature of admissions in Canadian universities, admissions are not guaranteed. Only best of the best students are granted admission in Canadian universities.

IELTS 6.5 and above with no module less than 6.0 is required for admission in Canadian universities.

Admissions in Ph.D are quite competitive and also depends upon the advisor’s availability and availability of funds.

ADMISSION PROCESS:

Since 2014, Canadian institutions accepting international students must be designated. They are given a DLI number. Students need to get an admission offer /Letter of Acceptance from a DLI in order to apply for study permit.

Students destined to study in Quebec are required to obtain CAQ from ministry in Quebec before applying for their study permit. Majority of the Courses at Canadian schools start from September (Fall intake). Popular programs also have a January(winter intake) and / or May(summer intake) intake as well.

PROCESS:

Students planning to study in Canada are advised to start their admission and visa process 6-12 months prior depending upon their level of study. For admission in high School, Career and Community colleges, ideally students should start process 6-9 months in advance. For admission in university, students should start admission 9-12 months prior.
