International students in Canada can apply for an extension of their study permit in following situations:

2. VISITORS -EXTENSION OF STAY IN CANADA:
Foreign nationals visiting Canada on a visitor visa can apply for an extension of their stay in Canada
Visitors in Canada are normally allowed to stay in Canada for upto 6 months. After that they can apply for an extension of their stay in Canada for another 6 months. There is no restriction on the number of extension applications however, the applicant need to justify the reason of stay in Canada.

Refugee claimants in Canada can also apply for an extension of their work permit if their hearing has not been done by the expiry of their initial work permit.
International students on a post graduate work permit whose work permit was less than the required period due to expiry of their passport, can also apply for an extension of their work permit.
